Equinox: The Art of Organic Winemaking in Moldova

Equinox is not just a winery, but a true legend of Moldovan winemaking, standing as a symbol of uncompromising quality, deep respect for nature, and an authentic artisanal approach. The brand's history began in 2002 when the talented and passionate winemaker Constantin Stratan decided to pursue his ultimate dream: to create exceptional wines that would honestly and accurately express the unique character of the land. He planted the first vines on the picturesque slopes of the Lucineasa hill, overlooking the Dniester River valley near the village of Olănești. This location is situated in the famous Purcari micro-zone in southeastern Moldova—a region historically renowned for its ideal conditions for producing deep, rich, and age-worthy dry wines. The first commercial bottle of Equinox was released in 2006: a Cabernet Sauvignon produced in a microscopic run of just 800 bottles.

The main pride and distinguishing feature of Equinox is its status as a pioneer of certified organic viticulture in Moldova. On his boutique 5-hectare vineyard, Constantin Stratan completely abandoned the use of synthetic chemicals, herbicides, and artificial fertilizers. Instead, wild grasses and wildflowers grow freely between the rows of vines, helping to maintain natural biodiversity and preserve soil health. The winemaker is deeply convinced that wine is born exclusively in the vineyard, and the human task in the cellar is merely to carefully preserve and highlight what nature has already created. For this reason, fermentation occurs exclusively on wild (indigenous) yeasts, and the wines undergo minimal filtration before bottling.

Red grape varieties dominate the Equinox vineyards, including the native Rară Neagră, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Carménère, and Malbec, alongside selected white varieties. The brand's signature is the highly acclaimed "5 Elemente" (Five Elements) range, featuring complex White, Red, and Orange blends where five different grape varieties harmonize beautifully. Another masterpiece of the winery is its flagship wine, "Echinoctius"—a powerful, long-aged red blend that is produced only in the best vintage years. The total annual production of Equinox is incredibly small, amounting to just a few thousand bottles per year. Every single bottle of this brand is a rare artisanal product, highly prized by collectors and wine connoisseurs both in Moldova and internationally.
